Spencer Reis Benefit Raises Thousands for Scholarship

Sophomore Class event at Catch the Wave in Plainview honors classmate.

Monday's benefit fund-raiser at Catch the Wave for the Spencer Reis Scholarship Fund raised about $4,700, organizers said.

Hundreds of people attended the all-day event at the popular Plainview JFK hangout in the Harmon Plaza. Cash contributions, yogurt sales and bracelet sales by the Plainview BBYO provided the total over the course of the day, said Zach Lewis, Plainview's Sophomore Class president and friend of the late Spencer Reis.

"Of course it's been hard without him, but I'm happy to do (the fund raiser) again because I feel like I'm helping him even though he's not here," Lewis said at Monday's event, surrounded by family and scores of classmates.

This year's event included a D.J. outside the store. It was held at Catch the Wave for the second year in a row with the help of its owner, Mike Agliato, who is also a New York City firefighter and has become friends with Lewis.
