Teens Struck by Car on Merrick Road

Sisters injured near Massapequa's Burns Park.

Two teen sisters were struck by a car on Merrick Road Tuesday night, seriously injuring one, police said.

The accident occurred at 8:20 p.m. when the sisters, ages 13 and 15 were crossing north on Merrick outside Burns Park.

The were hit by a 2006 Toyota Corolla driven by an 18 year-old woman. The 15-year-old sustained head injuries and is listed in serious but stable condition after being airlifted to a local hospital.

The 13 year-old was treated for leg injuries and is in stable condition.

The driver remained at the scene and passed a breathalyzer test. Police say there is no apparent criminality.

The car was impounded for safety checks.

The incident happened during the Town of Oyster Bay's annual "Salute to America" event at Burns Park. It wasn't immediately known if the girls were coming from the popular celebration.

It was the second accident this week on Merrick Road. On Monday night, a man was killed by a hit and run driver, according to police.

My name is lisa I am the Aunt of Katie& Jessie. How dare you Blame my nieces for this or my sister. You people Have No idea what they are going through!!! My niece is celebrating her 16th birthday in a hospital with severe head trauma, bruises all over her body, lost teeth and fractures in her face. My niece Jessie is in extreme pain with TWO broken legs which has required more than 1 surgery a broken clavicle a 5 staples in her head. The fact that my brother in law received a heart breaking call from his wife about this, he had to drive up from Delaware with this tragic news about his daughters, could you do that? Could you be driving back to another hospital at 4 am to see your other child, then go drive back to see the other, You people are pathetic!!!!! Instead of posting words of we are praying for the girls and the family it's this crap you post! This was the first time they were here they don't live in massapequa, there was no police crossing, there was nothing for them. The girls were mowed down you foolish person ! you do not suffer like this by being tapped by a car!!!!Get your facts together there was no rear end collision. My nieces are receiving so many prayers and so many people want to help. I BELIEVE they will survive!!!! I hope the rest of you with your negativity Never suffer like this. You wouldn't last 1 night in my sister or brother in law's shoes. NEVER!!!

Lisa i am so sorry for what has happened. These ignorant idiots are probably blaming Eve for your sisters egg dropping in the 1st place. People have no facts & go on senseless rants. Even with facts this clearly is none of anyones business. Maybe you people should put your energy into prayers for this horrendous tragedy instead of bashing & blaming. Look back at the stupid things you people have said, you should be embarrassed

I had posted this comment on July 21, in response to KARENS post and it was removed. I had inquired with the editor and through a few emails back and forth, I had hoped he would put it back up. I haven't heard back so I am reposting it because clearly, it is OK to say what I had said. As a close family friend and on behalf of the Aunt, of the sisters AND their parents, HOW DARE YOU make accusations like this. You don't know what happened or how it happened. If you can truly sit there and believe that these two, 14 and 15 year old girl's who almost lost their lives, one with 2 broken legs and the other with severe head trauma, IN 2 separate hospitals where their parents have to jockey back and fourth to be by their child's side, was due to lack of parental guidance, or adolescent irresponsibility, I truly feel sorry for you. I can't even imagine what your children are learning with ignorance like this. You my dear, should really should be ashamed yourself. Rather than bashing and blaming, perhaps you can say some prayers for the beautiful girl who is still today, on a ventilator, fighting for her life. For the record, one of the girls turned 16 on Wednesday and started to breathe on her own. WHAT A GIFT. Thank you Cathy! Beautifully put.. Lee, pay no more mind to the ignorance out there. Prayers are being answered and that's all that matters.

Suzanne, Those girls and their families are in my prayers. No parent should ever have to go through this. I suppose people blame because they need a way to be sure this could never happen to them. I am sorry for what that poor family is going through right now.
