Violent Crash Shuts Down Seaford-Oyster Bay Expressway

Traffic tied up for hours as cars diverted through Plainview.

A car-truck collision on the Wednesday left miles of traffic headaches in its wake.

The crash just past the Wallace Drive exit southbound closed Rte. 135 between exits 11 and 10 for hours Wednesday afternoon. A tractor-trailer and a Jeep collided near the bridge beneath Southern Parkway in Plainview, sending both vehicles careening into the woods at Wallace Drive.

Both the truck and the Jeep flipped over about 1 p.m., with the cab of the truck initially resting on top of the Jeep. Emergency workers swarmed to the scene and managed to free the Jeep from the wreckage, police said.

Initial reports indicate that one person suffered non-life-threatening injuries, police said. There was no further update overnight.

The Jeep was cut open and remained a twisted wreck at the scene; the truck was on its side amid broken tree limbs on the shoulder of the roadway. Heavy towing equipment was brought in to pull the truck out of the woods.

All afternoon, crews attempted to clear the wreckage. The roadway was fully operational around 10 p.m., police said.

Police diverted southbound traffic onto Wallace Drive and through the streets of Plainview toward Old Country Road. There were residual delays all over town, including heavy traffic on Manetto Hill Road approaching the entrance to the Northern Parkway

Some delays were evident on the eastbound Long Island Expressway near the Rte. 135 exit into the early evening.

The cause of the accident and further details were not available.

Richard, I agree. This road has so many potholes that were fixed, it dips and the county trees haveRead More lifted it up in areas that now hold water. I have ben living here for over 30 years, and I cannot recall it ever being done. It needs to be done soon, I so agree with you. Maybe Mangano will see this and do something, then again if we lived in Bethpage, it would of been done already.
