What Can Be Done To Make Sunrise Highway Safer? [POLL]

Are you angry about the frequent accidents on this busy roadway? How would you address this problem?

Sunrise Highway has a sordid history as far it its record of safety is concerned.

study from the Tri-State Transportation Campaign named Sunrise Highway as being one of two major roads that run through Massapequa that count among the area's most hazardous.

Most recently, on Tuesday of this week a brought East and Westbound traffic to a standstill, and on Dec. 22, 2011, an  while crossing Sunrise Highway during rush hour.

What do you think should be done to curb the danger of Sunrise Highway? Would you lower the speed limit? Install more traffic cameras? Have more police patrol the area?

Take our poll and leave some comments.

I agree with Lou on this one. It's not the road, it's the driver. Seems that the rules of the road have either been forgotten, or are just being ignored. If I had a dollar for every idiot I see speeding through stop signs in residential neighborhoods and riding my tail, I would be a very wealthy lady indeed. Slow down and get off the phone!

There are a myriad of reasons why there are so many accidents in this area. I can tell you one that I know is a leading reason and has already been mentioned... NOT FOLLOWING THE RULES OF THE ROAD. We live in a society where everyone truly believes "it's me first." Just because they may put on their blinker, they believe they can cut in ahead of the rest; just because there's a "turn on red" law, no one remembers that it's really means "come to a complete stop and when allowable, you can make that turn on red." All the time, I see people running the red and making the turn into traffic that is coming to that intersection at a higher speed than the car turning. The same thing goes for stop signs..you rarely see people coming to a stop. Don't even talk to me about merging into traffic from a highway! Those people barely slow down, never mind coming to a crawl before proceeding with caution--even with a stop sign! Our society has this awful impression that it's all about "me." Me...me..me. I get mine and then good luck getting yours. It's the same thing on the road. Today's drivers are the worst. I think it began with the stupidity of "turn on red" and "crossing a double yellow line to enter or exit a business parking lot or driveway." People will block traffic so they can cross over the lines without concern for safety on the road. We need to educate drivers that: "just because you're permitted, doesn't mean you should."

Stop the police from guarding parking lots out of public sight and let them do their jobs controlling traffic. Also, stop the police showing favoritism and give everyone tickets on the rare occasion they stop people. Too many drivers in Nassau County know somebody in power so they get away with not following laws.

There have been several serious accidents at Sunrise and Lakeshore. Considering it is a PEDESTRIAN Cross over for People walking, jogging and biking in the park, I would think it should have a red light camera installed. In addition the area should have more lights at night so pedestrians are more visible to drivers. As others have stated, Drivers need to be more aware of OTHERS around their cars.
