Coliseum is Rusting Relic; Now What?

Politicians bemoan loss of Islanders; what would you do with Uniondale site?

Let's face it: our Coliseum isn't Rome's.

The rusting relic of a bygone sports era is going to be abandoned by the Islanders for Brooklyn, and soon.

If you live in Plainview, you can still see your team play, and easily: Take the LIRR from Hicksville to Jamaica; hop on the Atlantic Yards Line and emerge at the Barclays Center. Simple; no parking headaches.

But that still leaves an 77-acre vacancy at a major Nassau County crossroads.

Wednesday night, County Executive Edward P. Mangano issued a statement, saying that following the funeral services honoring fallen Nassau Police Officer Arthur Lopez, Mangano will put an economic development team in place to redevelop "The Hub."

Tell us what you think should be done with the site:

  • What should our legislative leaders do right now to move forward?
  • What sports or recreational facility should be built there? (Maybe it's time to bring back Roosevelt Raceway and a racino? Minor League baseball is a blast.)
  • What related economic development initiatives make sense for the site?

We'll compile your answers into poll form and pass them along to Nassau's leaders.

Richard, I agree. This road has so many potholes that were fixed, it dips and the county trees haveRead More lifted it up in areas that now hold water. I have ben living here for over 30 years, and I cannot recall it ever being done. It needs to be done soon, I so agree with you. Maybe Mangano will see this and do something, then again if we lived in Bethpage, it would of been done already.
