Guide to Area Memorial Day Events

From Oyster Bay to the Atlantic Ocean, the holiday weekend is filled with nearby activities.

Memorial Day Weekend is here and with it come a variety of big events across the Town of Oyster Bay. The Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach is the biggest region-wide attraction, but local parades and memorial services will remember those who gave their lives for their country.

Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach:

Jones Beach: The annual air show's performances are from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday at Jones Beach State Park, Wantagh. The show is free, but there is the usual $10 parking fee. This year's featured performers are the U.S. Navy Blue Angels and the Canadian Forces Snowbirds. But numerous vintage aircraft, including the will be out in full view. Organizers recommend you come early and dressed for the beach. Remember sun screen and a hat.

Eisenhower Park Memorial Service:

Hempstead: The United Veterans Organization's Memorial Day Service and Monument Dedication takes place Sunday at 10 a.m. The guest speaker is U.S. Air Force Colonel Margaret M. McNeill, a decorated veteran and a member of American Legion Post 1812 of Plainview.

Monday Parades:

Farmingdale: The for the parade that begins at 10 a.m. and runs along Main Street.

Glen Cove: , stepping off from Cottage Row and Forest Avenue and proceeding down School Street to Glen Street, turning at Pulaski Street and at the arterial highway, passing the reviewing stand at the Glen Cove Library and ending at Charles Street.

Massapequa: The  promptly at 10 a.m. The route begins at Broadway and Commonwealth Avenue; moves south on Broadway, east on Clark Boulevard to Park Boulevard, where it will be reviewed, proceed to Front Street, and travel west to Brady Park. A memorial service and wreath laying ceremony will be conducted at Brady Park.

Plainview: The  on Old Country Road at Pasadena Drive, continuing east past the fire headquarters and the Morton Village Shopping Center to Manetto Hill Road. The parade turns north there to Washington Avenue, where it proceeds east to the . A memorial service follows at the park.

Syosset: Marchers assemble at 9:30 a.m. at the Variety Preschool for Syosset’s annual parade. A ceremony follows at Memorial Park across from .

Parks:

All parks are open on Memorial Day. They'll operate on normal hours, closing at dusk. State parks, such as Jones Beach and , along with county parks, like Eisenhower, are open as well.

Businesses and shopping:

There is no mail delivery on Monday, which is a federal and state holiday. All state, federal and local government offices are closed. Most retail businesses are open all day, and many have sales and specials.

Stop means stop. Just like stop signs, where it seems like the local definition is to slow down toRead More 30 mph. You STOP, and look. Then go. I have seen kids having a tough time crossing Jamaica Ave because of this twisted definition of STOP. If anything, this is a good way to relearn what should of been taught in drivers ed. When I moved to Plainview, people at a stop sign would signal the driver that got there first to go. Now it's a race to the stop sign and fly by it to avoid having the other guy go first.
