LIPA Reports Widespread Outages

Plainview area among those affected as fierce storm blows down power lines.

The Long Island Power Authority has reported more than 50 power outages in Nassau and Suffolk counties affecting thousands of its customers, including about 100 customers in the Plainview area.

Most of the Plainview-area outages are isolated in Old Bethpage, where 70 customers were affected as of 2 a.m. Power is expected to be restored in Plainview and Old Bethpage by morning, LIPA reports.

The outages, scattered across rain-battered Long Island, were being reported early Thursday morning in West Hills, Jericho, Glen Cove, Massapequa and Hicksville, authorities said. Unless conditions deteriorate further, LIPA expects service to return by morning to these locations.

A winter-weather advisory was in effect early Thursday. The National Weather Service was reporting high winds gusting to more than 30 miles an hour and had issued a flood watch for Long Island. The rain is expected to end by morning.

Thank God, no! We were out for 8 days when Hurricane Irene hit!

Oh no, eight days? I'm sorry to hear that. Glad to hear your power stayed on today.

Was out for about six hours last night. Power eventually came on around 2am. I have to say, though, LIPA handled it really well. I called them as soon as the power went out, and I actually reached a *live person*! She told me the nature of the problem, and that trucks were being dispatched. Within 45 minutes two trucks were in the area. Can't complain about this one at all. With Irene ... was out for five days. :(
