LIRR Adds Trains For New Year's Celebration

Additional service is timed to get people in and out of Penn Station and Times Square.

The has added 10 additional westbound trains to Penn Station Saturday evening for New Year's Eve, including four that will pass through beginning after 5 p.m.

The first additional train to New York leaves Hicksville at 5:46 p.m. It's about 45 minutes to Penn Station from Hicksville.

An additional 14 trains have been added eastbound out of Penn Station during the early morning hours Sunday, after the big ball drops in Times Square. Five of those trains will roll through Hicksville station. The first one leaves Penn Station at 12:29 am. Sunday.

Alcoholic beverages are banned in Times Square for the public celebration. The LIRR has banned open alcoholic containers on the New Year's Eve trains, in its stations and on its platforms. The LIRR has also banned smoking on its outdoor platforms, a move that came in November. The LIRR claims MTA Police will enforce the ban.

The railroad is operating on a holiday schedule on Sunday, but on a regular schedule on Monday, even though Jan. 2 is a federal holiday.

Stop means stop. Just like stop signs, where it seems like the local definition is to slow down toRead More 30 mph. You STOP, and look. Then go. I have seen kids having a tough time crossing Jamaica Ave because of this twisted definition of STOP. If anything, this is a good way to relearn what should of been taught in drivers ed. When I moved to Plainview, people at a stop sign would signal the driver that got there first to go. Now it's a race to the stop sign and fly by it to avoid having the other guy go first.
