LIRR Delays Expected Through Evening

Derailed Amtrak train in East River tunnel cancels 20 trains

Trains have been canceled and delays are expected during Monday's LIRR evening rush as a result of Sunday’s Amtrak derailment in one of the East River tunnels.

That means that Plainview area passengers traveling on the two main rail branches through Hicksville station may face delays Monday night.

Of the 126 trains normally operating during the p.m. rush, 20 eastbound trains from Penn Station will be canceled and combined with other trains, which the MTA warns will result in trains being crowded.

For example, on the Ronkonkoma Branch, which runs through Hicksville and then toward Bethpage and Farmingdale, the 4:54 p.m. train from New York was canceled. Customers were accommodated by the 5:01 p.m. train from Penn Station.

On the Port Jefferson branch, which runs through Hicksville toward Syosset and Huntington, the 6:30 p.m. train from New York is canceled. Customers will be accommodated by the 6:35 p.m. from New York to Hicksville.

Customers should allow extra travel time and expect at least 10-20 minute delays during the evening rush. Stopping patterns on some trains may change, so customers should listen for announcements or consult station signage. The trains that do run are expected to be crowded.

Amtrak said it is working on the problem.

The definition of STOP in the driving world is " the complete cessation of movement".Read More Sound like many people think STOP signs mean 1. Slow To Observe Police or 2. Stop means stop. Just like stop signs, where it seems like the local definition is to slow down toRead More 30 mph. You STOP, and look. Then go. I have seen kids having a tough time crossing Jamaica Ave because of this twisted definition of STOP. If anything, this is a good way to relearn what should of been taught in drivers ed. When I moved to Plainview, people at a stop sign would signal the driver that got there first to go. Now it's a race to the stop sign and fly by it to avoid having the other guy go first.
