'No Swimming' Lifted at TOBAY Beaches

Nassau lifts first beach closure of 2012 season.

It's safe to go back in the water, according to the Nassau County Health Department.

Nineteen Nassau County beaches, including , , and were reopened Thursday after being closed by  stormy weather. The runoff of storm water often elevates bacteria levels in the North Shore waters.

Nassau County Legislator Dave Denenberg announced Wednesday that swimmers would be pulled out of the water as a "precautionary measure" because of the problem.

According to Denenberg's announcement, "storm water runoff can have a negative impact by elevating bacterial levels and affecting bathing water quality."
