Question of the Day: Alternative Cuts?

The Mangano Administration's plan to merge eight Nassau police precincts into four has been met with widespread opposition from Democrats, police unions and a large segment of community.

Mangano claims the merger will effectively take police out of "desk jobs" and put them to work on the streets. He claims a savings of $20 million is possible.

Consider these questions and offer your thoughts in our comments:

1. Is $20 million worth all this strife? The total budget is $2.63 billion.

2. Isn't there some other department or agency that we can do without than causing a in Nassau's police coverage?
