The Town Board held two public hearings on its proposed budget Tuesday The public had nothing to say at either.

Oyster Bay held two public hearings Tuesday on it's proposed 2012 budget. There are no tax increases proposed for next year's fiscal plan. The budget increases spending slightly. the increase is offset by increased revenues, the town says.

Why is there so little apparent public interest? Is everyone happy with the status quo? Does no tax hike bring this ho-hum reaction?

Or is the budget itself too ponderous? It weighs about five pounds and runs about 200 pages. It's hard to read and harder to understand.

Or is it something more ominous: Is it that people no longer think their opinion matters to entrenched elected officials?
