Report: LIRR Plans Major Renovations to Hicksville Station

Newsday reports improvements are needed on the main branch.

A report in Newsday Sunday indicates the Long Island Rail Road intends to spend some $203 million to renovate its main line, with major improvements planned for Hicksville station.

The newspaper said Hicksville station is in need of significant repairs and a bridge in Westbury needs to be replaced. The money was originally targeted for a project that would build a third rail line along the central route that runs from Jamaica east to Hicksville.

What do you think of the idea: Money well spent? More delays? Just more problems?

Individuals who have not viewed the plan might think alternatives are better. Once intelligent individuals do see the actual plan thay will agree that it is the best way to go. These type of updates have already been done for Seaford and are in process for Massapequa. (the third track (not third rail) hurts some individual's private property where there this plan serves all increasing service where 41% of LIRR traffic flows through Nassau County's busiest station. A third rail is what powers electric trains. A third track indicates what trains ride on. Be more responsible and report this correctly.

Joel: Sorry for the confusion. I thought it was clear that third rail line indicated an additional track. If the reference was to a "third rail" that phrase would be a compound modifier, and therefore hyphenated. Without the hyphen I thought it was clear to readers. Thanks for pointing this out.

Well said Joe! I believe the third rail line is needed. For those of us who ride the trains every day, this is should be done based on the reverse commute trains that are held up by any delay of the rush hour main line trains. I believe the only areas where some streets would be affected is in Floral Park, maybe New Hyde Park and the Stations at Mineola. I wouldn't be surprised if there was enough room now, with the tracks being realigned. Every day there are delays on the reverse commute lines that could be reduced with the third line, especially when trains start to go into Grand Central.

My understanding is that the LIRR already owns enough space along the right-of-way to add a third track from Jamacia to Hicksville, and that it is the NIMBYs who bought a house with its back yard along the tracks that are the problem. If the east side access to Grand Central ever gets completed, they're going to need that third track very badly.

I find it hard to sympathize with the people that bought homes along the side of the tracks. It would be the same as the people in Howard beach by JFK airport complaining about the airplane noise. They knew what they were getting or could get when they bought their homes . If we need the 3rd rail then we need it . Full speed ahead with the 3rd rail!
