LATE UPDATE: Storm Skirts Long Island; NWS Says Minor Snow Possible Saturday

NWS reports the storm has moved east and north of Long Island. Heavier snowfall amounts Upstate and in New England.

Plainview's road were wet but otherwise clear Friday night as a storm brushed past Long Island and headed off to the north and east.

The National Weather Service said the bulk of the storm is past Plainview and Long Island. The storm moved east and north of Long Island and heavier snowfall amounts were recorded Upstate and in New England.

The NWS said another inch or so is possible Saturday morning before a clearing trend takes over.

The forecast is a long way from the widespread problems that were left in the wake of the Christmas that dumped 20.5 inches of snow on Plainview. 

A heavy band of snow squalls crossed Plainview and other North Shore communities about noon, leaving roads slick. The sun emerged in part for a while, but an additional blast of snow approached Long Island from the south, forecasters said. By 6 p.m. Friday night, a waxing crescent moon was visible in the western sky. Through the evening, the skies gradually cleared.

Snow had been predicted to fall through the afternoon and leave 3-6 inches on Long Island roadways before stopping sometime Friday night. Salt trucks have been deployed to keep roads from icing over. One was spotted at 1 p.m. in Plainview salting side streets near  Area residents said the plows were out in force during the afternoon.

Because of dropping temperatures, experts warn of possible black ice on roadways as darkness approaches.

students were not sent home early. After-school activities were still on as of 3 p.m.

However, varsity and JV basketball games at St. Mary's for Friday, Jan. 7th have been postponed. There is no rescheduled date. The track meet at St. Anthony's for Friday has been canceled.

The JV basketball game at St. John's scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 8th is still on pending weather conditions, school officials said.
