Street Renamed for Sister Jackie Walsh

Ceremonial renaming honors beloved nun who was killed last summer.

A dedicated and beloved nun who died in a tragic hit-and-run crash last summer has been honored with a ceremonial street renaming in her memory.

"Sister Jackie Walsh Way" is the new name for the corner of Teibrook Avenue and Jackson Avenue in Syosset.

Oyster Bay Town Councilman Chris J. Coschignano, a parishioner at St. Edward the Confessor Church in Syosset, spearheaded the campaign. He was joined by fellow congregants and colleagues in government, including family members, and other elected officials.

The sign, “Sister Jackie Walsh Way” was produced by the Town of Oyster Bay’s Sign Bureau.

Sister Walsh was a youth minister to young people at Our Lady of Mercy R.C. Church in Hicksville along with being a teacher and campus minister for young ladies at Our Lady of Mercy Academy in Syosset.

Sister Jackie was also an integral member of St. Edward the Confessor Church and a beloved member of the community. She was struck and killed on July 9 by a hit.

In the end Sister Jackie lived by her motto: “Never grow weary from doing what is right.”

Richard, I agree. This road has so many potholes that were fixed, it dips and the county trees haveRead More lifted it up in areas that now hold water. I have ben living here for over 30 years, and I cannot recall it ever being done. It needs to be done soon, I so agree with you. Maybe Mangano will see this and do something, then again if we lived in Bethpage, it would of been done already.
