Tell Us: LIRR Fare Hike

It's March 1 and the LIRR fare hike comes in like a lion.

By now you've probably heard that the Long Island Rail Road is hiking fares beginning today.

Passengers out of Hicksville or Bethpage will be paying more to ride the train beginning Friday.

How does that make you feel: Is the hike justified. Are you getting what you pay for. Are you angry: Tell us in the comments.

According to the LIRR, most commuter rail tickets will increase between 8.19 percent and 9.31 percent, depending on ticket type and distance traveled. A complete list of new ticket prices are listed on the LIRR’s website.

At a time when salaries are stagnant, increasing rates by 9% is unjustified. I am glad that I no longer work in the city and have to pay these outrageous fares but a friend who is a college student in the city can barely afford the rate she has been paying.

the lirr trains are dirty, the bathrooms are disgusting, workers are rude, anouncements are for the most part hardly ever made and sometimes the signes in and on the train dont work and the lirr has the nerve to increase fares. I will expect more efficiency with the lirr or they will hear my mouth everyday when I call to complain.

Anyone else? Can the fare hikes be defended? Shouldn't there be a major effort to expand and improve the lines, the platforms, the tunnels, the stations, and with federal money? It's the largest commuter rail line in the country. For all it's faults, it is still moving tens of thousands of people daily.

The trains are dirty. The bathrooms are unacceptable. The trains are crowded & late. There is no justification for a rate hike. The MTA needs to start operating the railroad like a business. Stop overtime, manage their employees and their benefits and they could operate more profitably without costing us more money.

While the MTA managements blames the union employees for alot of the cost of operating the R.R., They will not admit to all the money that is wasted on paying for all the vice presidents, directors , consutlants, and the list goes on and on. Too much incompetency in management is the biggest reason why they had to raise fares. If the LIRR had competition like the real world , they would of been out of business a long time ago
