TOBAY Notebook: Leaf Blowers and Noise Law

Oyster Bay Town Clerk issued his annual reminder regarding the hours of operation for leaf blowers.

“Few things are more disruptive to the tranquility of an early morning or a lovely spring or summer evening than the distinctive ‘vroom’ of a leaf blower,” Labriola said.

The town's Noise Ordinance addresses many concerns about noise pollution ranging from radios and home audio systems to loudspeakers and signaling devices such as horns and sirens.

Under the ordinance, the hours of operation for leaf blowers are restricted to between 8 a.m. and 7 p.m. weekdays and between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. on weekends and national holidays, Labriola said.

The hours apply to landscapers as well as individual homeowners. To report violations, residents should contact their local police precinct or the Town’s Department of Public Safety, which can reached by calling 677-5350.

Kids of Distinction Deadline Aproaching

The deadline for the scholarship program is quickly approaching. Applicants must submit a completed application is April 15.

In it's eighth year, "Kids of Distinction" Scholarship Program recognizes outstanding young people who have been active in exceptional endeavors in their community. 

Six Oyster Bay youngsters were honored for their commitment to their communities. The event is sponsored by the town Kids Helping Kids by Kids Way, Inc. Co-Founders Robert A J. Eslick and Philip M. Eslick.

The Kids of Distinction program focuses on activities participated in outside of school. These activities should have, in some way, benefited the community. Nominees are placed in two categories, those currently in fifth through eighth grades and those in grades nine through 12.

Nominating forms can be obtained at Town Halls North (Oyster Bay) and South (Massapequa), as well as at local libraries. Nominating forms can also be found on the Town’s Web site, www.oysterbaytown.com. Winners will be recognized at an upcoming meeting of the Oyster Bay Town Board and will be presented a $500 scholarship

"Eggstravaganzas" planned for 2 town parks

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor invites residents and their families to celebrate springtime at the town’s second-annual Eggstravaganza & Spring Festival.

“Last year was the first year the town hosted this free event, which features fun activities for youngsters, including a petting zoo, crafts, a plant your own sunflower seed project, bouncies, games, prizes, popcorn and cider,” Venditto said. “This year, the event has been expanded to two parks to make it more convenient for residents to join in the fun.”

The Eggstravaganza & Spring Festival will be held Saturday, April 14, at Woodbury, and on Saturday, April 21, at Marjorie R. Post Community Park, Unqua and Merrick Roads, Massapequa, from 1-4 p.m. Both events are rain or shine.
