TOBAY Notebook: Challenging Assessments

Oyster Bay taxpayers have the right to challenge their latest Property Tax Assessment for the 2013-2014 tentative assessment roll.

“Grievances may be filed with the Nassau County Assessment Review Commission during the ‘grievance period,’ occurring Jan. 2, 2012, to March 1, 2012,” said Oyster Bay Receiver of Taxes.

Taxpayers can examine the assessment rolls and obtain assistance at a help desk at the Nassau County Department of Assessment, located at 240 Old Country Road, Mineola. 

To receive an application in the mail, or receive assistance over the phone, the Assessment Review Commission can be contacted at 571-2391. The application form is also available on the Nassau County Web site, http://www.nassaucountyny.gov/agencies/arc/index.html.”

Stefanich also has applications available at his offices, located at 74 Audrey Ave. Oyster Bay; Town Hall South, 977 Hicksville Road, Massapequa; and, from Feb. 3 through Feb. 10, at the , 55 Duffy Avenue (corner of Newbridge Road), Hicksville.

“Any taxpayer who believes an error has been made regarding their property assessment should take advantage of this opportunity to establish a correct and fair assessment value for their home,” Stefanich said.

Civic Groups Can Get On Web Site

Civic organizations and chambers of commerce are welcome to be listed on, and linked to, the Town’s Web site.

Those interested should write a letter, on official stationery, listing the name of the civic or chamber; the president; a mailing address; a contact person, if different from the president; the phone number; and, if the organization has a Web site, the Web address.

The letter should be addressed to: Supervisor , Town Hall East, 54 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay, NY 11771. He asked that civics and chambers already listed on the Web site check their information and submit any update.

Landmarks Commission to Meet

The next regularly scheduled meeting of the Oyster Bay has been scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 25.

The meeting will be held in the Town Board Hearing Room, Town Hall East, 54 Audrey Ave. Oyster Bay, beginning at 7 p.m. The public is invited.
