TOBAY Notebook: Flag Etiquette Tips

Reminder: No sanitation pickup on Monday.

This time of year, Americans often pull their American flag from storage with plans to proudly display Old Glory.

But flag etiquette can be confusing. and local veterans have developed a brochure to help residents properly and respectfully display the “Stars and Stripes.”

The brochure describes how to raise and lower the flag, display it indoors and outdoors and at ceremonies and parades, how to fold the flag and how to dispose of it when it is no longer fit to fly. The free brochure is available at the Town Halls North (Oyster Bay) and South (Massapequa), the Department of Public Works (Syosset) and at major park facilities, or call or write to the Town of Oyster Bay Public Information Office, 54 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay, N.Y. 11771 (624-6380). A copy can also be downloaded from the Town’s Web site, www.oysterbaytown.com

And remember. On Memorial Day, the flag is flown at half staff until noon, honoring the nation's war dead. Then it is raised to the top of the staff until dusk, weather permitting.
