TOBAY Notebook: Town to Honor Vets

Week three of TOBAY's "Music Under The Stars"schedule: some terrific free shows are planned.

The ’s Veterans Volunteer Awards will take place on Tuesday, July 12 at John J. Burns Park Town, Massapequa, as part of the “Salute to America” concert, according to Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto. 

The program, to begin at 7:15 p.m., will include a musical performance by country music star Aaron Tippin and conclude with fireworks by Grucci. A highlight of the program will be presentations to the winners of the Town of Oyster Bay’s 2011 Veterans Volunteer Awards.  

This year’s winners include Lifetime Achievement Award recipient Richard M. Hochbrueckner, nominated by the American Legion’s Charles Wagner Post No. 421, Hicksville; Veteran Volunteer of the Year Gus Scutari, nominated by the American Legion Eugene S. Smith Post No. 175, Syosset; and Friend of Veterans Volunteer of the Year Ute Marquardt, nominated by the American Legion Massapequa Post No. 1066.  To see more about their service to the United States, click here.

“There is no greater recognition than to be acknowledged by one’s peers, and these members of the veteran community truly deserve tremendous credit,” Venditto said. “The legacy of this year’s recipients’ involvement on issues and concerns affecting veterans is to be truly commended."

The Town's “Music Under the Stars” concert series hosts its third week of performances beginning Monday, July 18. 

Time Was, The Clusters, and Killer Joe and the Lido Soul Revue will kick off the week with a performance at Ellsworth W. , Motor Avenue in Farmingdale, on Monday, July 18 at 8 p.m.

It will be an evening of classic rock when Eddie Money takes the stage at John J. Burns Town Park, Merrick Road, on Tuesday, July 19, at 8.

If you like the music of Billy Joel, you won’t want to miss Mike DelGuidice and Big Shot, a Billy Joel tribute act, when they perform at Tobay Beach, Massapequa, on Wednesday, July 20, at 8 p.m.

And, on Friday July 22, Dean Karahalis and the Concert Pops of Long Island presents an evening of “Sing and Swing” at Syosset-Woodbury Community Park, Jericho Turnpike, Woodbury, at 8 p.m.

The concerts are free and open to the public.

Homeowners' cleanup set for July 16

The fourth of eight 2011 homeowners' cleanup programs for Oyster Bay Town residents will take place on Saturday, July 16.

The clean-up is for residents only, (no businesses) who may take unwanted, non-hazardous rubbish to the Town’s Solid Waste Disposal Complex, Bethpage-Sweet Hollow Road, Old Bethpage, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Bushes, tree limbs, fence posts and similar items will be accepted as is and need not be broken into smaller pieces. Used tires, large metal items in excess of four feet, clean fill, clean broken concrete, and boats and boat trailers will also be accepted. Passenger cars, vans, pickup trucks and small trailers are admitted to the program.

Six-wheel or larger vehicles are not permitted. Proof of district residency must be shown.
