Today's 5: President's Day Closings

Lots of people are off today; here's what's closed and what's open.

Monday is President's Day, a federal holiday that impacts government institutions, banks and schools. Most retailers are open today.

Each day the "5 Things" column offers five essentials about your day in Plainview. We want to engage our audience in the topics, events, and hot-button issues that are important to them. Help us do that by adding your voice. Add it to the calendar or send us a news tip. Post a comment on the news and the issues that matter most to you.

On Monday:

1. The President's Day holiday means all federal, state and local government offices are closed. Parks and recreation centers are open, however.

2. There is no postal delivery, except for Express Mail, and post offices are closed today.

3. Most banks and the major financial markets, including the New York Stock Exchange, are closed.

4. Plainview schools are closed today, the first day of the winter recess that lasts all week.

5. Most retail businesses and restaurants are open as usual, and there's lots to do on your day off. Check out our events listings for a complete rundown.

There was garbage pickup today and I know some of my neighbors didn't realize that. I believe they don't check the Town of Oyster Bay website or pay attention to the town calendar which the town mails every year in December. Is the town wasting money on those calendars as I don't even keep mines. The only bank that I know that is open today iis Chase. Guess other banks will follow in the future.

I should have realized that garbage would be collected as it was collected last year. There is no pickup on Martin Luther King Day but there is pickup on President's Day. It does seem a little odd how the holidays are worked out. I would think that both days should be a holiday but perhaps holidays just create more work for our sanitation crews.
