Town Awards Solar Contract for Old Bethpage Solid Waste Facility

Town could net up to $560,000 per year from solar installation, says TOBAY official.

The Town of Oyster Bay Board approved a contract with Salt Lake City-based sPower Tuesday to install install a 2-megawatt solar power generating station at the Old Bethpage Solid Waste Disposal Complex.

sPower would install 8,800 solar panels across 7 acres at the top of the capped landfill, as well as approximately 800 more on the roof of the garbage transfer station, said Town spokesperson Brian Devine.

The panels will generate the 2-megawatts that the contract calls for, which will subsequently be sold to LIPA as part of their initiative to bring sustainable energy alternatives to Long Island.

sPower will own and operate the facility, and will pay the Town an estimated minimum of $155,000 per year. Based on the variable price of power paid for by LIPA, the Town could be paid as much as $225,000 per year.  Additionally, sPower has applied for a NYS Grant which, if approved, could net the Town up to $560,000 per year.

The Old Bethpage facility is located on Claremont Street in Old Bethpage.
