Town Dock to be Repaired For Oyster Festival

Work to begin immediately and expected to be completed within 30 days.

Work is expected to begin immediately on Oyster Bay's western waterfront pier, a key component of the Oyster Festival that was damaged by Hurricane Sandy last year.

The pier is expected to be shipshape in plenty of time for the annual October celebration, town officials said.

The pier is structurally sound; the work is contained to replacing planking, boards and railings, said Brian Devine, a spokesman for the Town of Oyster Bay.

This week, the town board awarded a contract to Woodstock Construction Group of Oyster Bay, whose bid was $185,130, Devine said.

The bid required the contractor to begin work immediately and complete the project within 30 days, he said.

"This ensures that there will be no potential conflict with the closure of the pier and any planned festivities from the annual OysterFest, on the weekend of Oct. 19," Devine said.

The pier has been off limits since Hurricane Sandy caused colossal damage across Long Island. It is often used by local fishermen, but also serves as the primary docking facility for the historic sailing ships and honored vessels that are a centerpiece of the annual Oyster Festival, set for Oct. 19 and 20.
