Water District Takes New Steps to Prepare for Emergencies

The Plainview Water District is taking additional precautionary steps to protect the community’s drinking water as hurricane season is upon us.

“The District’s number-one priority will continue to be to make sure that our consumers will receive the cleanest and safest water without any interruptions in the event of a natural disaster,” said Board of Commissioners Chairman Joel Kessler.  “Last year during Superstorm Sandy, we were able to supply our residents with our precious natural resource without any interruptions and strive to do so again if necessary.”

In the event of a natural disaster, the District’s sites and staff are prepared to act swiftly, Kessler said. An emergency response plan has implemented, including contracts with emergency response teams, water testing laboratories and water main repair contractors.

The District is also a member of NYWARN, a mutual assistance program where neighboring water suppliers across the state provide emergency assistance when necessary.

The Plainview Water District has its own emergency electrical generator facilities on line which are ready to ensure the continued supply of potable water, Kessler said. Even in the event of a disaster, the district uses many different treatment processes to provide clean, safe water; meeting and/or exceeding the standards regulated by the county, state and federal government.
