The MTA says problems have emerged beneath Jamaica Station, including contaminated soil and unexpected underground water sources. The project was originally planned for completion in 2015. The authority has brought in tunneling experts from Europe to help solve the problems.
The East Side Access project would cut some 40 minutes from a typical journey made by LIRR riders whose ultimate destination is the East Side of Manhattan. Now, all LIRR trains end at Penn Station, on the West Side.
