Which Town Laws Are Most Ignored? [POLL]

The Town of Oyster Bay has all sorts of ordinances. Which ones are violated most, and which make you angriest?

The has ordinances governing , dogs and , to name a few.

Garbage pails can only be curbside between specific hours. Leafblowers and lawnmowers have curfews. Dogs must be on leashes and can't leave anything behind, if you get my meaning.

And all those rental apartments in people's basements: virtually all are illegal, according to the town.

Have you ever complained? Did you feel like a rat?

Which of these town-ordinance violations anger you most? Remember, the town only enforces its ordinances when someone complains.

Take our poll and leave some comments. We'll take them to town officials for their reaction.

Can a law please be passed regarding street parking in residential areas? The side streets have cars parked on both sides making it almost impossible to drive through it. Cars are parked on corners decreasing visibility. Why not pass a law prohibiting street parking between 9pm - 6am. This shouldn't be an issue since most driveways are empty!
Vin NY April 4, 2012 at 11:49 pm
If people start receiving tickets they will stop putting their garbage out so early. I put my garbage out the morning it gets picked up.
Helen April 4, 2012 at 11:56 pm
Sorry, I'm still going on about the apartment issue. Yes, thorn in my side - it's the thumbing of the nose that so irks me. Now, I have no issue with grown children moving back home - c'mon -we know what it is like out there for young people, but to WILLINGLY FOR PROFIT convert your home - whether you live there in one ILLEGAL unit or not - the ILLEGALITY is the problem. Hey, we could all use more money in our pockets - can I go ahead and convert my home? The TOWN has to get involved and aggressively. They're always crying money issues so why not go after these homeowners with purpose. Stop with the lame excuses - they're not home, can't get access - change the law - where if the homeowner is not going to provide access - then the homeowner starts receiving stiff fines - until access is granted. C'mon people, help us here.....
Re April 5, 2012 at 12:55 am
I hate the lack of sidewalk inspection . Why do they require you to report a neighbor who ignores their sidewalk that has been lifted by tree roots. There are too many sidewalks in poor condition in certain areas.
JOE April 5, 2012 at 01:00 am
As long as the tenants are not overcrowding the home , do not have school age children, respectful and curteous to neighbors, and quiet. I do not have a problem with it. Maybe homeowners are forced to take on tenants to pay the out of control school tax bills. I wonder how many people posting on this topic actually vote for the school budget and the board member elections. We need more people to vote at the May elections and also more people to come foward to run for the board.
Helen April 5, 2012 at 01:03 am
John, you have just eliminated 3/4 of the people renting "illegally". Honestly, would you feel the same way if every other house on your block took on tenants because of the tough economic times? Zoning laws.....
ed April 5, 2012 at 02:00 am
Code enforcement can only get in an illegal apartment with consent or a WARRANT. People simply say no to a TOB inspection. Therefore nothing gets done.
JOE April 5, 2012 at 02:29 am
I have people renting on my block. They are quiet and you never see them. No problem. The zoning laws are rediculous. Why should I pay more taxes because I made improvements to my home with an addition while a neighbor down the block who has not done a thing to his home pays half the taxes I do. IT's BS!!
Simba April 5, 2012 at 08:38 am
As Ed puts it the real issue is the lack of enforcement and the ability for the town to do it's job as it should. We can stomp our feet all we want but if Venditto doesn't move his fat a## nothing is going to get done.
Take this forum, recently we were asked about the road conditions, anything done yet ???? Not !!!

Is this Glen Cove Patch?
lookyloo April 5, 2012 at 05:19 pm
My neighbors all use the same service it seems. They start at 7 so they can finish the four houses that they service. Now, I'm up....but c'mon....7?
Lisa Hankel April 5, 2012 at 11:32 pm
If you know who the violaters are then call the Town Animal Shelter at 516-677-5784 and make a complaint and they will send someone to speak to the person and maybe give them a summon
Lisa Hankel April 5, 2012 at 11:35 pm
Call the shelter at 516-677-5784 and make a complaint about it if you know the house numbers of the violaters then tell the shelter they will send someone around to take care of the problem
Helen April 5, 2012 at 11:49 pm
That's my point - people can turn TOB away - and they have - and that is why those laws need to change - Why am I suffering for their monetary gain? Why must I follow all the rules but other feel so free to break them? BECAUSE THE PENALTIES ARE NON-EXISTANT. Start making an example of these people with fines and liens - whatever. Why is everyone so afraid to make stiffer penalties?
Zella April 21, 2012 at 05:30 am
People complain yes...but do your homework first please. Grouping all so called "illegal apartments" into one category is irresponsible to say the least. The town can infact gain access to anyones house very easily and do every day even on false or highly exagerated complaints. I've done my homework and John is so right...the zoning laws are rediculous especially in TOB which happens to be the most strictly enforced on all of LI. For those of you who don't rent but maybe have a finished basement, you too can find Code Enforcement knocking on your door. If you happen to piss somebody off that decides to get back at you by lodging an entirely fabricated complaint there's nothing to stop them. You get inspected and you'll find that you have violations you didn't even know you had. So here's my complaint, TOB needs to update their regs and put some kind of system in place to ensure that the person making a complaint is the same person who's name is being used and stiff penalties for false reports. We have scammers, con-artists & people I call "professional evictionists" lurking in TOB especially in Bethpage. These are the people we need to protect ourselves from. For anyone that does have an "illegal apartment" in Bethpage watch out for a dangerous predator with the initials MR or MDR - long hair, wears only dresses, pretends to be a holy roller, pretends to be disabled - dangerous beyond words - identity theft, vandalism, assault, etc., etc., etc., & has many aliases to boot!

No, David, this is Plainview... for Town of Oyster Bay. I did the exact same thing with the Levittown Patch...I thought it was Town of Oyster Bay, when it was Hempstead!
EWell April 21, 2012 at 08:16 pm
Dog owners can't do anything about this. I know it kills grass but it's unavoidable. If it happens it front of you you can spray it with a little water and the dilution won't kill the grass.
Steve April 21, 2012 at 08:41 pm
Yes, it IS avoidable!! Walk YOUR dog on YOUR property so it pees and craps on YOUR lawn NOT MINE!!! Why should I have to stand vigil and waste MY time to rinse MY lawn down after YOUR pet is done relieving itself when afterall it was YOUR choice to have a pet NOT MINE. So enjoy your pet at YOUR expense and effort NOT MINE.
Robert G. Schaffrath April 21, 2012 at 08:47 pm
Agreed! I just gave up trying to maintain the berm. As far as I know, the town only requires the grass to be cut. I do not bother trying to fill in the dead areas that have been killed by dogs. Eventually most of the berm will probably be weeds and dead grass. If anyone asks, I'll tell them to talk to the dog owners.
Matt Grabowski April 22, 2012 at 01:37 am
And who cares about dogs anyway? Most who bring their dogs out only do if they're friendly. There's no point of owning a dog if you can't take him on the beach.
Steve April 22, 2012 at 02:15 pm
Matt
Whether or not I've owned a dog and whether or not your dog can or cannot stop peeing or crapping is completely academic and absolutely irrelevant to anything that I have been stating. What I have been trying to convey is that it is downright discourteous and outright disrespectful for you or any other dog owner to put your pet on your neighbors property to begin their peeing and crapping in the first place. How would you feel if I was out for a walk and suddenly had "the urge" and left you "a present" on YOUR walkway? You obviously love your pets. But if the love of your pets is so great that it blinds you beyond comprehension of this then I don't know how else to explain it to you.
Concerned Long Islander April 22, 2012 at 02:27 pm
Steve, the only way to maybe get through to Matt is for someone to call the Town. When he receives a fine, then maybe...just maybe... he'll "get it." Otherwise, it's people like this who force laws light this to be enacted and who force enforcement!
lookyloo April 22, 2012 at 09:10 pm
I've got two dogs and they are trained to go on the curb or street. Still I have one neighbor that decided to rub salsa, yes chunky salsa, all over the curbs to try to keep the dogs off his lawn. Yep that salsa cooked in the sun and smelled pretty rank. Not to mention that his property is where the sewer drain is located so I can imagine what vermin were visiting his property at night. Now if my neighbor thinks that he owns the curb, then I suggest the next time it needs repaired, he pay for it out of his own pocket rather than the city of Glen Cove. In any event, the idiot stained the curbs and it looks like a real nice orange spattered mess. Funny thing is, this guy's lawn is a mess and so is his house. Yep, same idiot that in the fall pushes his leaves right in the street and or burns them in the back yard.
Helen April 22, 2012 at 11:37 pm
Zella, The person making the complaint must either provide a valid NYS drivers license on the complaint, or have the complaint notarized and sent to the town. Now, unless there are fraudulent notaries floating around, that should ensure that the complainant in indeed legit.
Helen April 22, 2012 at 11:40 pm
The best dog owners can do is walk their dog curbside not sidewalk side. This eliminates them peeing on the front of someone's lawn - and perhaps only on the grass by the curb. So long as people CLEAN UP the solid waste that's all I can ask for. As for the current early walker who doesn't clean up their dogs waste and has left several gifts for my neighbors - well, karma baby....karma.....
Steve April 23, 2012 at 12:17 am
Apparently you can't or won't comprehend what I have been trying to convey. Once again, It's YOUR dog. If you want it, then let it crap and pee on YOUR lawn. Seems pretty simple to me. You say you're "nearly positive" they'd understand. So I guess if I'm one of your neighbors we'd be running into a problem because you seem to feel that it's OK to have your pet foul other people's property. I just wonder what your reaction would be if you opened your front door to find me taking a dump on you front step.
Carol mccarthy July 25, 2012 at 03:17 am
There is a house on the block that is a rental and the house is in such poor an d unsanitary condition that rats are starting to come around. Is there anyway that someone from the TOB come see the house and check if the condition of the house is in any condition that someone should even be living in it? No one on the block seems to even know the person who owns the house and is now renting it to a family who has children who are dirty all the time and has animals loose all the time. The cats in there house are just multiplying and roaming every surrounding neighbors property. What can be done about this?
Concerned Long Islander July 25, 2012 at 06:53 pm
Carol, there is to be many depts that should get involved with the house you're discussing...code enforcement, animal protection, Nassau County Board of Health. Come on, for the sake of all taxpayers and especially the families on your block, get on the phone, go online and email the Town, print out a complaint form and mail it... don't be intimidated by signing a complaint form. Nothing will happen to you, And, when email the Town on their wesite, make sure you mention Venditto's name. I believe he really does care for the citizenry...you just need to ensure that the email is forwarded to him. Keep it up and don't let it slide. This is a VERY important problem and it can be solved---especially with the Board of Health. Remember what they say about the squeaky wheel~~!!
Bonnie Smith September 8, 2012 at 03:21 pm
I agree with you 100 per cent. A house near me has been littered with illegal apts and goodness knows how many people live in that same house. Over 14 years I have called the TOB and NOTHING has been done to stop this or fine the owner...who by the way lives in another town. This particular house has been a problem for years. Extra noise, parties, trash, cars, trucks, on the road etc. It is a nightmare. They have even hit our cars that were in the road. And the loss of tax revenue to the town has got to be huge. This is a scourge to our towns and neighborhoods that must be stopped. The town codes MUST be enforced. Or we can kiss our suburban neighborhoods goodbye, as well as our bank accounts as our taxes go up up upi to pay for all the problems and expenses of multi illegal apts in a so called one family dewlling. Give me a break. This should be the number one issue on the docket of politicians today. It's the economy stupid. The lost revenue from illegal apts is sucking our counties and towns dry.

Dam nosy neighbors need mind there own business. People gawking and peering through there windows. The definition of STOP in the driving world is " the complete cessation of movement".Read More Sound like many people think STOP signs mean 1. Slow To Observe Police or 2. Slightly Touch On (brake) pedal. Time to go to traffic school online at www.oltep.com. Relearn what you forgot from Driver's Ed. Stay Safe

Stop means stop. Just like stop signs, where it seems like the local definition is to slow down toRead More 30 mph. You STOP, and look. Then go. I have seen kids having a tough time crossing Jamaica Ave because of this twisted definition of STOP. If anything, this is a good way to relearn what should of been taught in drivers ed. When I moved to Plainview, people at a stop sign would signal the driver that got there first to go. Now it's a race to the stop sign and fly by it to avoid having the other guy go first.
