First Year Completed in Special Partnership

Plainview JFK partners with North Shore LIJ in program focused on medical careers.

Plainview JFK celebrated the first year of a partnership with the North Shore/LIJ Health System with a "white coat ceremony recently.

The ceremony was attended by Nassau County Legislator Judy Jacobs D-Woodbury, North Shore/LIJ leaders and members of the Plainview/Old Bethpage Board of Education and Central Administration.

Thirty students participated in this program and were presented with a white doctor coat to recognize the achievement.  This idea stemmed from a meeting of the community and the North Shore/LIJ community about different issues.

Joyce Thornton Barry, the science, research and technology chairperson, was present and suggested this partnership known as a "Career Academy."

Career academies are small, personalized learning communities within high schools and they create a pipeline for a future workforce that is knowledgeable about the industry and provide the skills and education that businesses need.

"This was an amazing event to witness, said Jacobs, who is also a community relations Director for the North Shore Administration.  "Some students successfully completed EMT courses, all gained infinite knowledge and the school district and North Shore/LIJ representatives were beaming with pride."
