Hannon Honors Plainview's 'Rising Stars'

Four Plainview JFK students were chosen as winners of Sen. Kemp Hannon’s 2012 Rising Star Leadership Awards.

Sen. , R-Garden City, recognized four Plainview JFK students for leadership and community service at a May awards ceremony at Levittown Hall in Hicksville.

Robert Ensmenger, Amanda Hedgecock, Steven Weiss and Joshua Young were each honored at Hannon's 2012 Rising Star Leadership Awards ceremony.

Ensmenger won the Athletic Leadership Award. Hedgecock earned the Overall Leadership Award. Weiss was recognized with the Community Leadership Award. Young won the School Leadership Award.

The Rising Star Leadership Award was created to honor outstanding high school sophomores and juniors in the Sixth Senatorial District, each of whom excelled in any of five leadership categories: Academic Leadership, Athletic Leadership, Community Leadership, School Leadership or Overall Leadership.

Weiss showed his leadership thanks to a resume thick with community service. A sophomore, Weiss volunteered as a sales clerk at the Plainview-Old Bethpage Middle School store. He is currently a member of the high school's Technical Service club, a DJ and vinyl coordinator for the WPOB FM Radio Station and a Junior Volunteer at the .

Stop means stop. Just like stop signs, where it seems like the local definition is to slow down toRead More 30 mph. You STOP, and look. Then go. I have seen kids having a tough time crossing Jamaica Ave because of this twisted definition of STOP. If anything, this is a good way to relearn what should of been taught in drivers ed. When I moved to Plainview, people at a stop sign would signal the driver that got there first to go. Now it's a race to the stop sign and fly by it to avoid having the other guy go first.
