Library's Film Reveals System's Failures

Documentary points to students lost in a broken system; PJC discussion on lively Bible tales.

Plainview's schools are renowned for their quality, good test scores and graduation rates. But segments of the American education system appear broken. A film Wednesday at the Plainview library illustrates that issue.

1. The  offers two free showings of the film: "Waiting for Superman," Wednesday at 3 and 7:30 p.m.  Davis Guggenheim's documentary  follows a handful of promising kids through a broken educational system. Rated PG; 102 minutes.

2. Besides the film, there's lots to do at the  Wednesday, like "Simply Stronger," a free exercise program to strengthen bones for seniors. The session is at noon. For more, check out our "events" listings or the library's web site.

3. On Monday,  put new schedules in place to accommodate summer track and signal work. Generally, mid-day trains are the only ones impacted. See our story on the changes here.

4. Rabbi Conn guides a class through one of the Bible's most dramatic books: I Samuel, at 8:15 a.m. Wednesday at the   It's a chance to get to know such Biblical stars as David, Goliath, Saul, Solomon and Bathsheba. A lively discussion will follow. The group meets in the Kirschner Room; refreshments will be served.
