"Little Doctors" Hosting Big Blood Drive Monday

For the first time, the student-participation program takes place at the POB Middle School today.

It's everyone's favorite blood drive with a new venue.

The first-annual Plainview-Old Bethpage Middle School "Little Doctors'" Blood Drive takes place today from 3:30- 9:30 p.m. and donors are needed.

The event, which has taken place at Mattlin previously, began with the 5th graders at POB Middle School participating in a presentation in class on the need for, and uses of, blood, organizers said.

The students were challenged to get 10 people to pledge to donate at the drive. Their teachers have chosen a group of interested students to serve as "Little Doctors" at the drive.

The students are given scrubs to wear, greet donors, make thank-you notes and help register donors.

"It is an exciting event for the children and all involved, as well as a learning opportunity about community activism and selfless giving," said Colleen Mack-Savino, who with Julie Kessler and Beverly Sender chair the POB PTA Council's blood drive panel.

Walk-ins are welcome. The event is in the school's cafeteria, near the gym. The school is on Central Park Road at Southern Parkway.
