Middle Schoolers See Career Possibilities

Seventh graders flooded into the Plainvew-Old Bethpage Middle School gym Friday morning as students and eventually left with a world of possible future careers.

It was Career Day and 32 professionals from different fields gave about 200 middle schoolers insight into their jobs.

At one table sat Joe Bica and Phil Morales, police officers with the State University Police at Stony Brook. They told excited students their job was anything but stereotypical.

"It's not just sitting in a police car and writing tickets," Bica said.

Both officers were impressed by the attention of the students and level of questions asked.

"A lot them are focused on what they want to do," Morales said. "Three in four know what they want."

Of course that could have changed after each student sat through presentations from three different careers of their choice. It's about showing students the possibilities, according to Career Day coordinator Scott Lieberman.

"We're fortunate as a school district to offer these programs to get kids thinking about their future," said Lieberman, a business teacher and internship coordinator. "It's people volunteering their time, which is nice."
