Northport BOE Pushes Point on 7-Eleven

Brief filed in State Supreme Court emphasizes opposition against proposed convenience store.

The Northport-East Northport Board of Education voted to submit a statement to the State Supreme Court reemphasizing its opposition to a proposed 7-Eleven on Waterside Avenue and Fort Salonga Road.

The resolution to submit an Amicus curiae, or "friend of the court" brief, was presented after a 30 minute executive session during the BOE's Oct. 15 meeting. Many saw it as a last ditch effort to influence the court's decision in a lawsuit filed by 7-Eleven against the town last year which claims that new regulations adopted by the town unfairly discriminate against convenience stores.

The 7-Eleven would serve as a danger to nearby Northport Middle School students by exacerbating traffic at an already busy intersection and serving as an attractant, said BOE members.

"We feel that this is an accident waiting to happen," said Board President Stephen Waldenberg.

The resolution to submit the brief was passed with one objection from Trustee Joe Sabia. Sabia was concerned that the $6,500 max attorney fee to draft and submit the brief was a "gamble" of taxpayers money because it is not guaranteed that the court will consider the document.

"At this point we should let the proceedings take their course of action and see where it goes from there," he said.

Oh my goodness, Kathy H. You never know where you'll end up in life and well you yourself could be south of the border (meaning 25a) someday. Let's hope your not thou, because you don't appear to be a nice person. I, too have lived in both communities. Pro's and cons to both. But, where was the BOE when 7-11 squeezed into Pulaski and Larkfield? I guess these 7-11's keep our xing guards employed. But it is supply and demand that is really in question. We in the community who shop there and give them our money only encourage store owners to multiply their profits and locations. Look out Centerport, you're next.

Kathy H-I grew up in the village. It seems by your statements that the people in section 8 housing, the grid and "all the rest" of East Northport have more class than you. It's people like you who have changed Northport for the worse.

Really Kathy and Frieda? This is what is important? With all the poverty, fighting and illness in our world, this is what you are angry about? This is just sad.

Northport is no better then anywhere else. It is just the people who live there that think they are better. A 7-11 could bring people and business to the area. Leave it alone and let what happens happen. As other people have previously mention the taxpayers money could have been spent somewhere else, other then the greedy people in northport who think they are better then everyone else. People lake Freida and Kathy H make me sick.

I grew up in the grid in East Northport and am proud of it. Maybe my parents didn't have the fancy cars or house, but I had a good upbringing and I would never have thought to put anyone else down because of where they lived. I have also lived on 25A for 14 years in an Apt. with my 2 children and can tell you that some of the people who live int the village can be cruel. No one is better than someone else, just because of a zip code or the location of their address. What section 8 housing, last time I looked it still isn't in East Northport. We already have a 7-11 on laurel and dickenson avenue and its never caused a problem with the school right next door. That store has been there since I was a kid. I just can't believe that people still have that better than you attitude. Im tired of others trying to make me feel inferior just because of where I live, did it ever accur to you that you could be hurting someone elses feelings by the way you see things. No that would never accur to you because you are too busy just thinking about yourself and how great you are and how others arent worth anything because they are not you. Maybe someday you will grow up.
