Pasadena Students Learn 'Hands-On' Hygiene

Hofstra North Shore-LIJ medical students take part in health-conscious program.

Second-grade students at Plainview's Pasadena Elementary School took part recently in a special program with medical students from Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine.

The medical students visited Pasadena school and delivered an educational Smart Board presentation about the benefits of personal hygiene.

The second-grade students then participated in an innovative "hands-on" activity in class that demonstrated proper hand-washing techniques. Medical students coated each of the Parkway students’ hands in a special lotion and then put them under a black light so that the children could see the germs.

The students also learned how a surgeon scrubs up before surgery. This is the second year that the Hofstra students have visited Plainview-Old Bethpage elementary schools as part of a partnership between Hofstra Medical School and the Plainview-Old Bethpage School District.
