Plainview JFK Student Takes Top Honors at Italian Poetry Contest

Students recite classic poetry in annual SUNY Old Westbury event.

Nine students from Plainview JFK Italian classes recently participated in SUNY Old Westbury’s annual Italian Poetry Contest, under the leadership of POBJFK Italian teachers Nicolette Pupillo and Kathryn Falbo.

The students who participated in this year’s competition are Daniel Desimone, Jaime Russolese, Chelsea Kim, Alessandro Albanese, Brandon Soffer, Alexander Soesman, Lorna Stevenson, Chai Yoo and Giselle Hernandez.

Ms. Hernandez won first prize in Level 1 Italian.

Abouty 250 junior high and high school students from Nassau and Suffolk counties participated in this year’s competition. Students competed by reciting classic poems in Italian and were judged according to their pronunciation, intonation, poise and interpretation.

The annual contest is sponsored by the Long Island Chapter of the American Association of Teachers of Italian. Ms. Pupillo and Ms. Falbo also served as judges for this year’s competition.
