Nearly 4,900 Plainview young people returned to the district's schools Wednesday, where officials reported the day went off without any major glitches.
The new are in place but barely noticed by the high school students, administrators reported. The are continuing at but the district is working around the inconvenience.
"Today we opened our doors to 4,890 excited students and a staff that eagerly anticipated their arrival," said the new Plainview-Old Bethpage superintendent, in her opening day message.
Lewis spoke of the new kindergartners in the Class of 2025, and the seniors of the Class of 2013. She said the district is committed to excellence to those students and all the grades in between.
"We move forward together to begin another chapter in the history of our district, with an eye on building on our successes of the past," she said.
The district is conducting several ongoing renovation projects. The courtyards in both middle schools were under construction this summer. The Mattlin courtyard was completed this week.

Some key upcoming dates:
- Plainview's varsity football team opens its season Friday night, at Freeport.
- The first meeting of the new school year is Monday at 7:45 p.m.
- The first four-day weekend is just around the corner; the Rosh Hashana holiday falls on Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 17-18.
- Plainview's homecoming football game is Saturday Oct. 13.
