Oyster Bay Man Killed in Crash on Northern State

Port Washington Schools Open Monday

St. Peters will be closed Monday; BOCES closed Monday, Tuesday

Port Washington Public Schools will be open Monday, though St. Peters will be closed Monday, and BOCES will be closed Monday and Tuesday, school officials said.

Parents received an automated call from the school district at 3:52 p.m. Sunday, in which interim Superintendent Dr. Kathleen Mooney said that transportation would be provided but families should expect delays due to road conditions. Staff members were told to exercise judgment, particularly given the current gas shortage.  Carpools are encouraged.

Power was only restored within the hour of the call, Mooney said.

No student will be penalized for missing school Monday, Mooney said.

School officials say they are "assessing this unprecedented situation daily," and express thanks to the community for its patience.

I understand everyone is upset about the situation. I will not have power, electricity or anything until at least next Friday, yet I am sending my kids to school. They are better off in school than at home, but that is my choice. I fully understand if people wish to keep their children home. The schools are doing the best they can at this point. From what I understand they are not holding absences against the children. so no one is required to go. I have lived here for almost 11 years and have not seen anything like this. People have lost so much in this storm, homes, children, businesses and pets. I am thankful I at least have the option of sending the kids to school. At least the building is still standing and our kids made it safely through the worst part of the storm.
Why all the complaints November 05, 2012 at 11:13 AM
There are soo many people in New York and New Jersey who have lost everything. Why do you feel that sending your children to school is something gives you a reason to rant. By complaining about the good intentions of the school district you are sounding like a very selfish person.
