School Board Formally Bids Farewell to Top Officials

Superintendent Dempsey, Deputy Supt. Jonas and others honored at meeting.

With fond words and memories, members of the bid a formal farewell to at the final school board meeting of the school year Monday.

Dempsey, who announced he would retire as leader of the district at the end of the school year, actually came out of retirement to return to serve the district.

"I am very appreciative of the board for that second chance," said Dempsey, who retired in 2001 and took a trip to Ireland. While he was overseas, the attacks of Sept. 11 took place. He suddenly felt a need to work with and be around children.

"Caring for children is a responsibility to cherish," he said. "I want to say to the board: "Thank you," for tha second chance at being responsible for children."

Board members heaped praise on Dempsey and shared memories of working with him since he was brought in as a calming influence on a district that had seen its share of internal and public turmoil.

"He always showed a calm demeanor, even when there was bad news," said Amy Pierno, the board's vice president. "He is a man of integrity who has always given us great advice."

Another top administrator is retiring from the district. Arthur Jonas, the Deputy Superintendent/Office of Human Resources, was also praised for his work in a wide array of projects for the district during his career in Plainview.

Dempsey will be replaced by beginning this summer. Lewis is completing her tenure as superintendent of the East Williston School District.

About a dozen other district employees retiring at the end of the school year were also honored at the board meeting Tuesday.
