Week Ahead: Short School Week; Homecoming Saturday

Coming weekend brings two big events to the area.

With the Columbus Day holiday, Plainview schools are closed today, making for a shortened school week. But the weekend brings two big events to the area.

Week Ahead:

1. Today is Columbus Day, celebrated as an Italian-American holiday. Plainview schools are closed; most businesses are open. There is no mail delivery Monday.

2. When school resumes Tuesday, Spirit Week comes to Plainview JFK High School in advance of Saturday's homecoming festivities.

3. Saturday's homecoming begins with a parade at 1 p.m. and the varsity football game against Uniondale at about 2:30 p.m.

4. Saturday also coincides with the opening day of the 29th annual Oyster Festival on the Oyster Bay waterfront. Some 200,000 people are expected to attend the event on Saturday and Sunday. We'll have reports all week.
