Work to rebuild the front steps to the , started in July, is ongoing, Northport-East Northport Board of Education officials said Monday.
Assistant Superintendent for Business Kathleen Molander said there is no estimated date of completion for the project and that construction workers are waiting for edging to arrive before they can begin pouring concrete. She predicted that the edging would arrive on Monday.
Trustee Tammie Topel asked if parking in back would be a problem should the stairs remain unfinished by the start of school on Sept. 5. Superintendent Marylou McDermott replied that the district could formulate a contingency plan, deploy security personnel, and notify parents, if necessary.
Members of the BOE toured most Northport-East Northport schools by Monday to survey preparedness for the first day of school. As part of "Operation Deep Clean," floors in the William Brosnan Building and the commons area of receieved a high gloss shine. New lockers are being installed in and black top areas have been repaved.
Tammie Topel said that many of the hallways in Northport Middle School were closed for the locker installations during middle school orientation preventing kids and parents from mapping out where class locations prior to the first day of school. She asked if arrangements could be made to open the hallways.
McDermott advised against it and said to call Northport Middle School Principal Timothy Hoss to see when that might be feasible.
