Eight Plainview-JFK Wrestlers Named 'All Conference'

Six varsity wrestlers qualify for County tournament.

Plainview-JFK's wrestling team scored big victories 'in last weekends Nassau County Qualifiers at Plainedge High School.

Six members of the team finished in the top four, earning All-Conference Awards and the chance to win county recognition as well. They will be representing Plainview JFK in the County Tournament Friday at Hofstra University.

Two other members of the team finished in the top six, giving them All-Conference honors and an alternate slot in the counties. As 5th place finishers, they still have a chance of competing next week should anyone in their weight class drop out due to injury, failure to make weight or other reason.

Local team boosters said it's been years since Plainview placed so many wrestlers on the All-Conference roster. The program has been rejuvenated under first-year head coach Joe Weinstein and assistants John Soehngen and Brian Gerney.

Both Weinstein and Soehngen are former All Conference wrestlers for Plainview. Many players have pointed to their coaches experience as a key guide for  them before, during and after matches, parents and boosters said.

Here are the results from last weekend:

  • Pete Papas; 99 lbs, 1st place
  • Joey Gruttadauria; 160 lbs, 4th place
  • Nicky Liosa; 170 lbs, 3rd place
  • Dylam Schmidt; 180 lbs, 4th place
  • Max Bettan; 220 lbs, 2nd place
  • Andrew Weiser; 285 lbs, 2nd Place
