Plainview Falls in Lacrosse Showdown

Hawks take early lead, but can't hold off talented Port Washington in 10-3 loss Friday.

Joey Froccaro is just a sophomore, but he has a famous surname. And like his older brothers, the young FOGO has a knack for winning faceoffs and changing the course of a game.

Froccaro won 10 of 15 faceoffs Friday and helped the Port Washington boys lacrosse team take control in the second half of a 10-3 win over host Plainview JFK in a Nassau Conference I showdown.

“The faceoff X is tough with Froccaro,” Plainview JFK Coach Chris Rogler said. “He’s very good. He’s quick with his hands. They were getting possession back after they scored. It’s real hard to see them score a goal and get possession back.”

It might as well be in the DNA. Jeff and Jake Froccaro, both currently teammates at Princeton, were high school All-Americans and renowned for their faceoff abilities.

“[Joey] has got great technique and very quick hands,” Port Washington Coach Tom Rooney said. “He’s poised at the X and he knows what he’s doing.”

The youngest Froccaro helped turn the tide of a game Port led just 3-2 at the half.

Luke Rizzo and Derek Caruso each scored for the Vikings (9-3 overall, 5-1 conference) to open up a 5-2 edge. And that forced Plainview (8-5, 4-2) to abandon its zone defense. The Vikings couldn’t be stopped one-on-one either.

“Any time we can get as many possessions as we did today we’ll win games,” Froccaro said. “If they don’t have the ball, they’re not going to score.”

Johns Hopkins signee John Crawley led Port Washington with two goals and four assists while fellow senior Derek Caruso added three goals. Freshman goalie Nick Ferrero stopped 8 shots.

“They tried to psych us out,” Crawley said. “We’re a North Shore team. We come out as not being the toughest guys. And in the past that’s been true. We showed toughness with composure and ringing it up on the scoreboard.”

Shane Lenehan and Kevin Pastier each scored in the first 2:35 for the Hawks.

“This game has been circled and I was real happy about the start,” Rogler said. “We figured that charge would get us going and keep us going.”

Port Washington trailed 2-0, but roared back to score 10 of the game’s final 11 goals. Now Plainview has two games left to refocus in time for the playoffs.
