Vintage Baseball Returning to Old Bethpage Restoration

10 teams to compete in weekend festival using 19th Century rules, uniforms and gear.

The Mutuals will play the Philadelphia Athletics on Aug. 4 at noon. 

The Old Bethpage Village Festival, celebrating its 15th year, showcases baseball in its original form. Ten teams from five states will be competing throughout the weekend ,playing by rules developed between 1860-1886. Along with the Mutuals, the other teams competing will be the Liberty Base Ball Club, Westfield Wheelman, Philadelphia Athletics, Providence Grays, Brooklyn Eckfords, New York Gothams, Atlantic Base Ball Club of Brooklyn, Mineola Washingtons, and the Brooklyn Excelsiors.

“We’re off to a great start this year,” said Mutuals’ captain, Tom ‘Big Bat’ Fesolowich, of the Mutuals’ 8-4  record. “It will be a great weekend in Old Bethpage to play in front of friends and family. We hope everyone can come out and enjoy Mutuals base ball.”

Formed in 1999, the Mutuals consist of players from all over Long Island, ranging in age from 18 to 64, who share a passion for the National Pastime. The team represents the championship Mutual Club of 1870, using replica equipment and wearing that year’s uniforms. Home games are played at Old Bethpage Village Restoration (OBVR) and away games as far as Delaware, Cooperstown and Massachusetts.

The festival will take place from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Sunday at Old Bethpage Village Restoration. Admission to the village is $10 adults, $7 children 5-12 (under 5 are free).
