Memorial Day: What's Opened, Closed

Today is set aside to remember the nation's war dead.

Monday, May 27, is Memorial Day, a national holiday set aside to honor the nation's war dead.

Plainview's traditional parade down Old Country Road will end with a solemn service at the town park on Washington Avenue to do just that. The forecast is for clear skies and temperatures in the 70s.

Here's what's opened and closed:

  • Municipal, state, federal offices: Closed (no meetings; but national, state and local parks are open.) There is no garbage pickup today; collection is delayed one day. Emergency services are on call around the clock, as always.
  • Post offices: Closed; express delivery only.
  • Schools: Closed.
  • Banks, stock markets and other financial institutions: Closed.
  • Retail stores: Liquor stores, diners, supermarkets and convenience stores are mostly open; some operate on limited hours.
Plainview annual Memorial Day Parade steps off at 9:30 a.m. and usually reaches Morton Village just before 10. The parade, which will include a broad cross section of community and civic groups, will divert traffic on Old Country Road, Manetto Hill Road and Washington Avenue for about 90 minutes.

The parade route then makes a left on Manetto Hill Road and then, a quick right on Washington Avenue to the Plainview-Old Bethpage Community Park. A solemn and stirring Memorial Day service is held there.
