Hundreds Go 'Baldrick' for Childhood Cancer

Plainview's first "St. Baldrick's fundraiser includes contingent from Good Shepherd, educators, students.

Hundreds of Plainview-Old Bethpage students and community members took part in Tuesday's first-district wide St. Baldrick's fundraiser.

Among those taking part at the Mattlin Middle School were students, teachers and administrators from the district, including Principal James Murray and Assistant Principals Chris Donarummo and James Bolen.

The community was also well represented. Led by Pastor Eric Olsen, a contingent of volunteers from Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Plainview shaved their heads to raise money for the childhood cancer research foundation.

The Good Shepherd crew earned about $3,000 in pledges alone, said Olsen, who was joined by his two sons, Luke and Lars, along with Elaine Cassimatis, Roy Steinhilber, Rodney Schabel and Alex Lessonav.

The District’s Youth Against Cancer club promoted the event for weeks and collected donations at the middle school, where a band played live music and vendors sold baked goods and raffled off prizes. The final total for the fundraiser is still being tabulated.

The buzz cuts were expertly donated by professional stylists from Unique Salon & Spa, with four area locations, including one in Plainview. The salons are owned by Carolyn Devito.
