Spring Blood Drive Huge Success

Overflow crowd donates at 'Little Doctors' drive at Plainview Middle School.

Plainview's recent "Little Doctors" Blood Drive was the most successful spring drive ever, organized announced.

The drive, sponsored by the P-OB PTA Council had 72 registered donors and additional walk-in volunteers. After deferrals, a grand total of 66 pints of blood were collected, an amount that has the potential to save over 170 lives.

"These are incredible numbers which reflect our community's dedication to this life-saving cause," said Colleen Mack-Savino, one of the PTA Council's organizers.

Almost twice the number of anticipated donors took part and sometimes, waits were longer than expected. "Happily, we had the Little Doctors available to greet donors, honor them with a "Blood Drop Mural" and make them homemade "Thank You" cards," Mack-Savino said.  "That made their time with us rewarding, rather than tedious."

The blood drives and their success over the year earned the PTA Council the 2012 Silver Award from the NY Blood Center at its recent Chairpersons' Recognition Dinner. The PTA Council's annual blood drives are co-chaired by
Julie Kessler, Beverly Sender and Mack-Savino.
