Today's 5: An Irony Not to be Lost

On Election Day, two Plainview congregations coincidentally remember the beginning of the Holocaust.

There is irony Tuesday that could be lost in the bustle of an Election Day: It coincides with a local commemoration of a day 73 years ago when innocent people were murdered and their rights were trampled upon.

Today, New Yorkers go to the poll to freely elect local leaders. Less than 50 percent of us are expected to vote.

Tonight, two Plainview congregations, one Christian, one Jewish, will remember Kristallnacht, the evening 73 years ago when Nazi goons killed, burned and looted in the name of their fascist leaders.

There are two ways to stand up and be counted today:

2. March: The public is invited to the Participants will gather at promptly at 6:45 p.m. for the 4/5-mile procession to the . The service at the synagogue is set for 7:30 p.m.; the public is invited there, as well.

3. It's all week long. The eight-day promotion features a special prix fixe dinner offered by all restaurant participants, including those in Plainview.

5. Check back through the day and late into the evening for local election updates and results. The polls open at 6 a.m. and close at 9 p.m. We expect results to begin coming in well before 10 p.m.
