Volunteers needed for Bay Clean-up

Annual town event is set for April 27.

Oyster Bay is preparing for the 20th harbor cleanup day, scheduled for April 27.

The annual event brings together Oyster Bay Town, North Oyster Bay Baymen's Association, and Friends of the Bay volunteers to help beautify the bay in time for spring.

The event will be held at the harbor from 8 a.m-2 p.m. that Saturday near Roosevelt Beach and Park. Each year, tons of paper, food, plastic, and other litter are left behind on beaches. That litter can remain for years if it isn't retrieved.

Volunteers will roll up their sleeves on April 27 and walk or sail along the bay, gathering trash, debris, and even the odd abandoned boat, leaving behind a pristine harbor.

“If you can’t stay for the entire day, even a couple of hours will make a difference," Supervisor John Venditto said. Food and beverages will be provided by the North Oyster Bay Baymen's Association.

"I can assure that you will leave with the satisfaction of knowing that you helped improve the environment and ensure that our beaches and harbor will be preserved for your enjoyment and the enjoyment of generations to come.”
