Here's a quick look at the week ahead in and near Plainview:

1. The weather may be the story of the week. A winter storm is crossing the Northeast but the brunt of the snow should miss Long Island. A messy commute is forecast for Monday morning. Then, rain is likely to follow, the NWS said.

2. As the week goes on, the temperatures are expected to drop dramatically. See the full forecast here.

3. The Plainview Reformed Church has a wide assortment of Advent events planned this month, including "Advent Brown Bag Lunches" this Wednesday and Wednesday Dec. 18 at 12:30 p.m. The traditional soup and bread will be served. See their entire Advent schedule here.

4. Speaking of which, did you know you can list your own events on Patch, free, and have them viewed by our growing audience? Just go here and add your group's event. Is your church or institution planning something special: We want your holiday concerts, Christmas parties, and anything your group needs promoted.

5. Plainview JFK's Orchestra and Jazz Ensemble will be in concert Thursday Dec. 12 at 7:30 p.m. All this week, we'll have lots of stories about the achievements of Plainview students.
