Operating bowling centers since the 1940s, AMF is the largest bowling chain in the world. The local Plainvew AMF is one of 14 on Long Island. The original automated pin-setting machines are still in operation at Plainview Lanes, a modest looking building tucked behind Crossroads Plaza near Plainview Road.

Dave, the building manager, explains that when they first opened back in 1962, there wasn't much else to do on Sunday. Today bowling competes with a wide range of activities but still the local AMF alley manages to attract a fare share of children and families to complement the industry-wide decline in league bowling.

Planview Lanes features a pro shop, "Hot Shots Bowling Supplies," owned and operated by PBA members and providing bowling lessons. There is also a fast food counter and bar serving alcohol. The lanes feature the standard colorful balls, cleaning machines, accessories vending, video and activity games for children, an ATM, lottery tickets, lockers, and restrooms.

AMF runs special activities and nights, including bumper bowling, extreme bowling and fund-raising events.
