Kevin J. Rea, candidate for Plainview's Board of Education.
Robert Drumm May 20, 2013 at 04:23 pm
Unlike Marni, I will be supporting Kevin Rea. He's has a young perspective, professional mindset,Read More and will be a breath of fresh air. Having worked with Kevin on past projects, I think he is just the change that is needed to allow the District to move forward on a successful path. In addition he will bring transparency to the table, as he has with every other post he has held. And that is something that is also desperately needed in the district as well. Also, having the pleasure of knowing Kevin and his family, I can tell you he has siblings in enrolled in schools around the district. You cant tell me that decisions won't weigh on his mind, on how they will effect his siblings. And being the family man he is, I can assure you every choice, decision, and idea will be looked at through that glass, as well as many others with the vast experience he brings the the table. So i would like to echo what Mr. Rea said early today. Im proud to say that I will be voting for Kevin Rea for Plainview Old Bethpage School Board on May 21. And i encourage all POB residents to join with me in that action.

I would like to note that although I do not have children currently in the POB school district, myRead More three siblings are enrolled at JFK & POBMS. Any insinuation that I have no direct impact on the decisions I would be making are false. In addition, this line of thinking is one of the issues I am tackling in this election. Everyone is impacted by the decisions made by the Board of Education- child in district or not. Until we change this mindset and make it clear that everyone in this town has a stake, the apathy will not go away and we cannot continue to move forward.

I will be voting (as should the rest of POB residents) for the candidates with children in theRead More school system - my first vote will go for Seth Greenberg. Then Gary and Emily. Hoping to see a big win for the 3 candidates most qualified for the job.
Incumbent Board Member Gary Bettan.

"We need to work with other high performing school districts on Long Island and across theRead More state to put pressure on our elected officials and the state education department to recognize our districts’ achievements and the time and money we are wasting on high stakes testing." I couldn't agree with him more. Standardized testing may make sense where it is needed, but clearly it is not needed in our school district.

Did the students' vote end up 10 to 9, just like all votes in the real Legislature?

Don't Just Apply To College. GET IN!

Sorry for the confusion, I am aware of what need blind means, and I was not saying that it had to doRead More with the students decision. I was stating that, contrary to your blog, most schools are not need blind.
The College Whisperer™ April 27, 2013 at 08:38 pm
"Need blind" has to do with factoring in financial need in the COLLEGE'S decision toRead More accept or deny, not the STUDENT'S decision whether or not to attend. In other words, colleges that are "need blind" do not consider a student's financial need when making admission decisions. Finances are always a consideration for the student, and should be taken into account both in deciding where to apply and where to go. How much, if anything, a college will offer -- whether need based or merit -- is another story entirely.

Since when are most colleges need blind? As someone who went through the application process justRead More this year, financial aid was a major factor in my decision, and I found that only the most well endowed colleges are need blind.
